You are required to make a 100-hour annual commitment as a volunteer, and must be able to commit to six months. The minimum commitment is to work 4 hours a week in any assignment. The maximum hours per week a volunteer can work is 20. The exact schedule must be agreed upon between you and the Director of Volunteer Services.
(These are some of the regular opportunities available. However, if you have special interests or skills, we will try to accommodate your preferences.)
Clerical Assistance: Assists with filing, photocopying, answering phones, data entry, stocking nurse servers, and other clerical functions. Shifts flexible, but usually during weekdays.
Emergency Department: Visits patients in the Emergency Room (non-trauma) and checks on how they are doing and whether they need anything. Assists with room turn-overs. Shifts: 7-days/week; 8 – noon, noon – 4, 4 - 8pm.
Emergency Liaison: Assists ER and Admitting staff by being a liaison between ER patients and their family members. Greets all entering the ED, ascertains needs and directs accordingly. Maintains the tidiness of the ED waiting areas, notifying housekeeping when necessary.
Courtesy Escort Service: Assists the hospital staff by taking patients to their destinations within the hospital and escorting discharged patients via wheelchair to the driveway by the front entrance. Work involves a lot of walking/pushing. Shifts: Monday – Sunday; 8 – noon, noon – 4, 4 - 6p.m.
Family BirthPlace: Assists the Family BirthPlace staff by monitoring entrance/exit. Shifts: Monday – Friday; 8 – noon, noon – 4 p.m.
Gift Shop: Serves as a salesperson in the hospital Gift Shop. Shifts: Monday – Friday; 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 1 – 5 p.m
Golf Cart Courtesy Transportation Service: Transports patients/visitors in golf cart between parking lot and buildings on the Mercy campus. Shifts: Monday – Friday; 8 – noon, noon – 4 p.m.
Information/Reception Desk Visitor Entrance: Greets people as they enter the facility, provides information regarding patient room assignments, and offers directions & other assistance to patients/visitors. Shifts: Monday – Sunday; 8 – noon, noon – 4, 4 – 8 p.m.
Joint Replacement Center – a specialized area of the hospital devoted to the post-operative recovery of patients who receive knee or hip surgery. Volunteers will learn numerous new things (names of medical equipment, kinds of exercises patients will perform, medical terminology), work side-by-side with the professional staff, and act as encouragement coaches. Shifts: Monday – Friday; 8 – noon, noon – 4 p.m.
Music to Heal Program: Musicians who come in to the hospital on a regular, monthly basis (maximum of 2 hours) to play in the waiting areas of the hospital. Shifts: Seven days a week.
Palliative Care Services: Visits with patients in the hospital who are on palliative comfort care. Offers comfort and encouragement. (Works under the direction of the Palliative Care nurse).
Patient/Guest Services: Visits lobbies, waiting rooms and hallways offering beverages. Work involves a lot of walking/pushing carts. Shifts: Monday – Friday; 9:00 – noon.
Spiritual Care Visitor: Visits patients in the hospital, prays with those who desire prayer, and offers comfort and encouragement. (Works under the direction of the Hospital Chaplains).
Spiritual Care Eucharistic Minister: Visits patients in the hospital, administers the sacrament of communion as appropriate, prays with those who desire prayer, and offers comfort and encouragement. (Works under the direction of the Hospital Chaplains).
Surgery Information Desk: Serves as a liaison between surgical patients, families and staff. Takes discharged day surgery patients out to their vehicle via wheelchair. Work involves some walking/pushing patients in wheelchairs. Shifts: Monday – Friday: 6:30am – 12:00; 12:00 – 4 p.m.
Veteran Visitation Program: Serves as a liaison with all hospitalized veterans. Makes visits, delivers some veteran benefit information, and lends an ear as needed. Shifts: Seven days a week.
